Researchers have indicated that the use of hearing aids can delay the onset and development of dementia.

“More work to better understand the relationship between hearing loss and dementia risk is very important,” researchers said.

The study, “conducted by Danish academics, included 573,088 people from southern Denmark aged 50 years and over, which was conducted between January 2003 and December 2017.”.

The team found that "the risk of developing dementia was associated with hearing loss by 7%. However, those with hearing loss who did not use hearing aids had a 20% risk, compared to 6% among those with hearing loss who used devices.".

"Although the clinical significance of these findings remains unclear, the study results suggest that treating hearing loss with hearing aids may be associated with a reduced risk of dementia," the researchers said.

They added that this "calls for a better understanding of the relationship between hearing loss and dementia as a critical step for developing prevention strategies."
