Iraq to ITU: Oblige social media to respect people’s cultures, religions

The Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri called on the International Telecommunication Union - ITU to oblige social media companies to respect the cultures and religions of people.

“Al-Yasiri, on the sidelines of her participation in the high-level event of the World Summit on the Information Society Forum, which is being held in the Swiss capital, Geneva, sent an important message to the ITU in which requested that the Union adopt an appropriate decision, measures and attention to Internet content published by social media companies to the people of the world,” said the Ministry of Communications in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
 
During her speech, Al-Yasiri stressed “the need for the Union to oblige social media companies to respect the cultures and religions of peoples and not offend them through absolute openness to the Internet content provided by these companies.”

“As Islamic people, we do not find sufficient cooperation and coordination by these companies in this field, which makes the value and societal system vulnerable to targeting as a result of the lack of control over content,” she said, revealing that “Iraq, despite its confrontation with terrorism and the security conditions that surrounded it, has achieved very large and rapid measures in the areas of infrastructure and digital transformation."
